SAYING GOODBYE (1/30/05)
Johnny Carson has stipulated he doesn't want a memorial service. But memorial services are not for the dead…they are for the living. When the great photographer Richard Avedon died last year, he also denied his legions of fans and loving friends a collective moment to mourn and hug each other and remember together…and it hurt. The emotion that's poured out since Johnny passed away last Saturday needs a place to land. Maybe we can come up with a new kind of event that gets around Johnny's self effacing passing. I vote that all the many comic talents he discovered do a live show that memorializes what he taught them and we could laugh with them. That could be the best way to say "Here's Johnny" for the last time...and allow us to say to him a very heartfelt good night. Tina's full column appears each week in The Washington Post. MOTHERING THE OLD BOYS (1/23/05) If only Laura Bush could be cloned and sent 'round the world to charm America's critics. There's no one who hasn't fallen under the sway of her serene smile. She's said that in the second term, she's going to focus on adolescent boys and help to "give them the life skills that maybe we automatically teach to girls." I like that idea! She does know something about bringing bad boys to heel… I vote to have her move on from soothing the president's nerves to defanging Cheney, Rummy and Wolfie. If there's any sign those neo-cons are about to tell her husband to bomb Iran, the "Supernanny" should send them to the Time Out Room. Tina's full column appears each week in The Washington Post. | |
